Borgo Egnazia

Borgo Egnazia

Sometimes I like to classify my holidays as pre child and post. Before was adventurous, spontaneous and decidedly adult in nature.
For the past years we rented an apartment in Ibiza on a long let and would go pretty much all year round. Whilst we absolutely love the island we reluctantly gave up our tenancy in search of other options. As parents of an only child we want her to be with other children and so this year we’ve taken her skiing and unveiled an unlikely talent!

This year we are in the process of booking our summer holidays and we have opted again for the luxury resort Borgo Egnazia in Puglia Puglia has been much hyped as the new Tuscany, unspoilt, charming and still retaining a rustic charm. Borgo Egnazia is a luxurious imitation citadel, sounds tacky, but it has been designed so thoughtfully it genuinely does look and feel 100’s of years old. For those that hanker after a sophisticated, swanky and luxury holiday experience that they had pre kids then this could be the place for you. So many resorts fail in this respect, some say they are kid friendly but aren’t and others just feel like an upmarket Butlins.

Children are really well accommodated with the sweetest staff in the kid’s club and a range of activities whilst you can slink off and have a cheeky coffee martini at 10am by the adult only pool.

A short buggy ride is their beach club, access to the sea isn’t easy but their beachside restaurant was one of our favourite in hotel dining options. It also opens in the evening for alfresco dining. There is also a sandy beach option a little further away, which is better for children and an out of this world fish restaurant (not part of the hotel) a little further round the bay. This fish side shack is a culinary experience not to be missed.

Food wise the hotel catering is sound. It is much improved from our initial visit 3 years back. The breakfast is outstandingly good especially if you love fresh fruit.  But to really sample authentic Puglian cuisine you need to venture outside of the hotel. Savelletri a tiny fishing village is located about 5 minutes drive from the hotel and offers some good options. I will write a more detailed post about where to eat in Puglia soon. Be sure to sample the ‘crudo’ raw fish which is a speciality of the region. I particularly loved the raw sea urchin and raw shrimp and am counting the days till I get to sample again.

So it is without hesitation that yet again we book a week at the Borgo followed by a week with my family in a villa nearby.   I am already looking counting down the days.
